This steady rise is driven by heightened health awareness, the fruit’s nutritional profile (rich in monounsaturated fats, fiber, and essential vitamins), and its versatility in both traditional and innovative culinary applications. As consumers continue to seek nutrient-dense and plant-based foods, avocado consumption is expected to keep climbing in the coming years.
Leading Producer
Mexico has long held the crown as the world’s top avocado producer. Recent data show that Mexico accounts for nearly 29–30% of global production, with annual harvests reaching close to 3 million tonnes. This dominant position is attributed to Mexico’s ideal growing climate, extensive agricultural infrastructure, and a tradition of cultivation that spans generations. In addition to Mexico, countries such as Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Peru, and Indonesia also play significant roles in meeting global demand, but Mexico remains the benchmark for production and export capacity.
Most Demanded Varieties
When it comes to consumer preference, the Hass avocado stands head and shoulders above all other varieties. Accounting for the vast majority of global avocado sales, Hass avocados are prized for their creamy texture, rich flavor, and extended shelf life. While other varieties such as Fuerte, Bacon, and Zutano are cultivated in various regions, the Hass variety is by far the most commercially dominant—often representing more than 90% of production in key exporting countries like Mexico. Its consistent quality and adaptability to international trade standards have made Hass avocados the benchmark for the industry.
Forecast for the Next Five Years
Looking ahead, industry forecasts remain robust. Multiple market analyses predict that the global avocado market will continue to expand at a moderate compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 5–7%. Globally, climate change has become an observed reality, with countries around the world experiencing increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Droughts, high temperatures, hailstorms, rainfall variability, strong winds, and heavy rainfall are affecting global avocado production and trade, impacting crop growth, productivity, and fruit quality. In some regions, changing weather patterns have made production unviable and, in some cases, producers have been forced to relocate production areas or abandon avocado production completely. Increased outbreaks of pests and diseases due to changing climatic conditions are also threatening production in many countries.
